horizontal Twin cylinder "mill" engine
All Chiltern Model Steam Engine kits are fully machined and can be easily assembled with basic tools. The model engines are fully working and can be run using live steam or simply using compressed air from foot or hand pumps.
The horizontal twin cylinder mill engine is basically two single cylinder engines connected via a common crank shaft. As such it is still relatively simple and retains the basic mechanics of engines which powered many mills, factories and mine pits in the nineteenth century.
The mill engine layout has two double acting cylinders, eccentric driven slide valves and a brass flywheel and is capable of powering a large range of accessories, in a variety of roles. The engine also includes triple split bronze pedestal bearings for the crank shaft and a substantial cast base.
On the twin crank shaft, the cranks for each cylinder are offset by 90° which means the engine will self-start in any position.
The kit consists of precision produced parts each carefully made and checked to ensure reliability in service.
The cylinder assemblies and pistons are manufactured from brass and the piston shaft and valve from stainless steel so are not susceptible to corrosion. The piston shafts pass through adjustable glands which are readily accessible.
To power the engine with live steam, connect it to our Horizontal 3.5" Model Steam Boiler.
